The 60-year-old star plays Sister Julienne in the BBC show, and says it feels great to not have to be made up before a day of filming.

“There was no make-up, which has actually been very freeing, not having an hour of make-up in the morning,” she said during an interview on This Morning. “And looking at the other nuns,

making sure they aren’t wearing any mascara.”

However, it's probably a good thing that no one is wearing mascara as Agutter also revealed that there can be a lot of tears on set.

The actress was speaking about filming the drama during an interview on This Morning (ITV)

Referring to the birth scenes, she explained: "They take a whole day to do it as they are quite difficult to do. You are working with real babies."

Agutter added that she took advice from a real-life midwife who told her that you have to put your emotions aside when delivering a baby.

“She said no, you have to be in control because you are there for the woman,” recalled Agutter, but went on to say that when filming the birth scenes, she "looked at her and she was in

floods of tears."

Call The Midwife has been commissioned for a 2013 Christmas special, and a third series of eight episodes will air in 2014.
