Tesco has launched a new initiative to cut down on food waste by offering customers half-price bakery items after 7pm. Notices have been seen in several stores advising that loose bakery
goods will be sold at a 50% discount after this time. A savvy shopper took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook page, followed by over 64,000 fans, to share the tip:
"Spotted this in my local Tesco Express - not sure if all stores, but maybe useful to someone." Among the freshly baked items that Tesco produces every day are delicacies like
pecan plaits, cheese croissants, and cinnamon or raisin swirls. A representative for Tesco confirmed that the markdowns generally happen around 7pm, although timings may differ between
stores, noting: "Markdowns on fresh products continue to be popular and help to prevent good food from going to waste." Earlier in March, Tesco began another test aimed at reducing
food wastage and tackling hunger - a select few Tesco Express stores started allowing customers to scan 'yellow sticker' items through the checkout for free after 9.30pm, reports
the Express. The specific Tesco Express store locations participating in the trial remain undisclosed. Through this free trial, Tesco explained that alongside continuing donations to
charities, their staff would have the first opportunity to access 'yellow sticker' items reduced earlier that day. Ahead of closing time, any leftover food marked with the stickers
will be up for grabs by customers for free during the trial. Commenting on the initiative, a Tesco spokesperson remarked: "We are constantly looking for innovative new ways to reduce
food waste. In all our stores we offer unsold surplus food to charities and community groups, donating millions of meals each month." They added, "This trial, in a small number of
our Express stores, will allow customers to take any remaining yellow stickered items for free at the end of the day, after they have first been offered to charities and colleagues."
