Cadbury Freddo fans are up in arms over a change to the chocolate bar's multipack size, which has been reduced from five to four bars, making it more expensive per bar. The smaller

multipacks remain priced at £1.40 at Tesco, increasing the cost per bar from 28p to 35p.

In contrast, purchasing individual bars costs approximately 30p, reports Birmingham Live. Outraged customers have taken to Tesco's website to express their discontent, with one reviewer

commenting: "A single Freddo is 30p and pack of Freddos used to be a 5 pack but now a 4 pack is £1.40. Make it make sense."

Another customer pointed out: "Cheaper to buy 4 bars separately, used to get 5 bars at this price."

Industry experts attribute the change to the soaring cost of cocoa, a key ingredient in chocolate production. Susannah Streeter, from Hargreaves Lansdown, explained: "The sharp rise in the

cost of cocoa, which is such a crucial ingredient, has caused a big headache for chocolate manufacturers."

She added that manufacturers have had to contend with rising energy costs and wages, but are aware that consumers will not tolerate significant price hikes.

As a result, manufacturers are implementing strategies such as reducing the number of bars in packs or the weight of individual products. Harvir Dhillon, an economist at the British Retail

Consortium, noted: "Chocolate prices, which are largely decided by large manufacturers, have been hit hard by global cocoa prices.

"The cost of cocoa has been badly affected by poor harvests in parts of Africa." Mondelez faced public uproar when they cut the Toblerone bar's size from 200g to 150g, a move which saw

wider gaps between its iconic peaks, though the change was reversed after two years.

Mark Jones, a specialist in food and drink supply chain matters at Gordons legal firm, commented at the time, "This is a sign of the times." Jones also referred to historical data, reminding

that "You may remember in July 2017, the ONS (Office for National Statistics) confirmed that 2,529 products shrank in size between January 2012 and June 2017, but their price remained the

same. The vast majority of the affected products were food and drink."

With economic conditions tightening, Jones predicts an upswing in 'shrinkflation', stating, "Now we are on the brink of another recession, shrinkflation will probably increase

again. Only this time, when the producers are caught, they are likely to point to the obesity epidemic as their motivation rather than their margins."
