In a sea of identical numbers reading 4502, there’s one rogue digit lurking in the mix… and it’s proving trickier than it looks to track down. The visual puzzle, created by Piktochart, seems
simple enough at first glance. But eagle-eyed players are quickly realising it’s no walk in the park. The numbers are almost identical, making it a real test of observation – and patience.
Ai Ching Goh, co-founder of Piktochart, says there’s more to this test than meets the eye. "At Piktochart, we believe visuals should spark curiosity and conversation. This puzzle is a
fun reminder of how easy it is to miss small details, especially in data-heavy designs. "Imagine you're at work and your boss asks you to check over the latest numbers. Would you
be able to spot the mistake?" Thousands have already given it a go – but can YOU beat the brainbuster and find the impostor in the grid? Puzzles where you have to find the odd number
out on a chart (often among a grid of similar-looking numbers) can be surprisingly difficult because they challenge several aspects of your visual processing and attention systems.
Here's why: Most numbers in the chart are designed to look almost identical, with the odd one differing by just a single digit, position, or shape. Your brain has to scan and compare
each item quickly, which is demanding when differences are subtle. When many items are close together, your visual system struggles to distinguish between them. This is called visual
crowding, and it makes it hard to isolate and process individual elements in a grid. You often have to hold patterns or anomalies in memory while scanning the grid. Your brain is doing a lot
of comparing and pattern recognition, which can quickly overload your working memory, especially if the chart is large. If there’s no clear rule for what makes the number "odd,"
your brain has to rely on brute-force scanning, which is both mentally exhausting and time-consuming. Staring at similar-looking numbers or symbols for extended periods can cause mental and
perceptual fatigue, which reduces accuracy and focus. Your brain starts to "blur" details together. You may come in expecting a certain kind of difference (e.g., numerical rather
than visual), and this can blind you to the actual oddity, which could be something subtle like a rotated digit or a different font.
