The DVSA has issued a warning to drivers to be vigilant of a crucial legal limit, stating it is "not always safe". The government has cautioned that you must not exceed the speed
limit for the type of road and your vehicle type, putting road users on high alert. "The speed limit is the absolute maximum - it does not mean it's safe to drive at this speed in
all conditions," warn both the Labour Party government website and the DVSA. Despite the motorway speed limit being 70mph, it drops to 60mph for cars, motorcycles, car-derived vans AND
dual-purpose vehicles when towing caravans or trailers. It also decreases to 60mph for buses, coaches and minibuses (more than 12 metres overall length), as well as goods vehicles over 7.5
tonnes maximum laden weight in England and Wales. The speed limit is 30 miles per hour (48km/h) in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland and 20 miles per hour (32km/h) in Wales. In built-up
areas, the speed limit (km/h) in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland for cars, motorcycles, car-derived vans and dual-purpose vehicles is 30mph, reports Birmingham Live. The speed limit
for cars, motorcycles, car-derived vans and dual-purpose vehicles when towing caravans or trailers is 30mph. The speed limit for motorhomes or motor caravans (not more than 3.05 tonnes
maximum unladen weight) and motorhomes or motor caravans (more than 3.05 tonnes maximum unladen weight) is also 30mph. In England, Wales and Scotland, the speed limit for buses, coaches and
minibuses (not exceeding 12 metres in length), as well as goods vehicles (not exceeding 7.5 tonnes maximum laden weight) is set at 30mph. Vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats, such as
buses, minibuses, coaches, and stretch limousines, are required to have a speed limiter fitted. This requirement also applies to goods vehicles with a maximum laden weight of over 3.5
tonnes. Speed limiters, designed to minimise collisions, restrict a vehicle's maximum speed by limiting the fuel supply to the engine. Consequently, having a speed limiter may prevent
your vehicle from reaching the speed limit.
