The most dangerous places to live in England have been revealed - and one of them is in Yorkshire. According to figures reported by 43 police forces in England and Wales, the highest crime

rate was in Middlesbrough. Last year, there were 24,000 crimes committed in the North Yorkshire town - a rate of 162 per 1,000 residents, or the equivalent of one crime for every six

residents. Nevertheless, of it was Met Police in London who had to deal with the most crimes, with 948,000 reported last year. When it came to community safety partnership areas, Birmingham

suffered the most crime, with more than 136,000 offences, including robbery, rape, burglary and murder.. Find out how dangerous it is in your area by using the interactive map below.

Nationally, there were 5.3 million non-fraud crimes recorded by police forces in 2024. This was around 300,000 fewer crimes than in 2023, representing a drop of two per cent. Meanwhile, the

latest annual Crime Survey of England and Wales (CSEW) has also been published. Based on face-to-face interviews, the poll tries to measure the quantity and impact of crime - including

offences which might never have been reported to police. According to the survey around 9.6 million incidents of “headline” crime - which includes theft, robbery, criminal damage, fraud,

computer misuse, and violence with or without injury - took place in 2024. This was about 8.4m more incidents than in 2023. Fraud increased by 33 per cent, with 4.1m people getting scammed.

Theft increased by 13 per cent to around 2.9m crimes. However, the CSEW shows that crime against individuals and households has generally fallen over the last decade, but with some

significant exceptions, such as sexual assault. It estimated that around 2.0m people over the age of 16 experienced domestic abuse in the last year, around 1.5m people were targeted by a

stalker, and around one million suffered a sexual assault. Crimes involving knives increased by two per cent to just under 55,000 offences, while crimes involving firearms fell by 20 per
