Students of private nursing colleges across maharashtra to go on strike

Over 640 nursing students from private colleges across Maharashtra will go on strike from January 23. The students from 64 nursing colleges, including Bombay Hospital College of Nursing,

Fortis Hospital College of Nursing and Terna College of Nursing in the island city, are protesting the withholding of their first-year exam results.        There are at least 10 students on

an average from all the 64 colleges who have been denied their marksheets of the 2013 exams. They had secured admission in these colleges under the management quota and have not appeared for

the Common Entrance Test (CET) for nursing courses.  “In December 2012, the state-run Pravesh Niyantran Samiti which controls admissions had raised objections regarding the management quota

admissions with the college authorities. Later, the authorities moved the Bombay High Court against the Samiti. However, we were never informed about the court case,” said Sujo Jose, a

first-year MSc student at Nagpur’s VSPM college of nursing. Like Jose, most of these students complain that they were kept in dark about their controversial admission status by their

colleges as well as the state medical education department. These students have already paid close to Rs1,50,000 as course fees and related expenses for the first-year and need to fill exam

forms for their second year by February.
