The phenomenon is expected to cause a 'minor' change in tides and their heights along the city's coastline. If you feel the sea becoming choppy on Sunday, blame it on the
supermoon on Sunday. The phenomenon is expected to cause a "minor" change in tides and their heights along the city's coastline. The National Oceanography Institute (NIO)
predicts that this time around, not only will the tides be much higher than what they were last year, but will also be highest along Mumbai's coastline this summer. Chief scientist of
the Versova-based NIO, S N Gajbhiye, said the increase in the tides' heights is "not an unusual phenomenon" and the supermoon on Sunday will be responsible for it. He said the
gravitational pull between the earth and the moon directly has a direct influence on the tidal movement. "It also depends on the topography. So, as you move northwards, the height of
the tides will only increase," said Gajbhiye. As per the NIO, the highest tide for the last summer was recorded on April 18 at 4.94m. The projection for Sunday is 4.95m. The highest
tide recorded for the same day last year was 4.35m. Meanwhile, volunteers from the western regional bureau of The Energy and Resources Institute are planning to observe tidal movements and
their effect on the wetlands at some crucial points along the city's coast on Sunday.
