japanese studio move design has completed ‘house-u’ a single family residence in the city of fukuoka. with the father often away from home due to work, a concept was created centered around
the sense of security, yet without compromising openness or livability. to do this, the home became a balancing act of interior and exterior, with other ideas — such as the structure’s
stability-evoking low height — integrated within.
a wall of wooden slats sets the pace for the design, through which is located a wide passage that circumnavigates the entire interior. all rooms, including the children’s’ rooms, bath,
kitchen, living and dining areas are directly accessible via the corridor. ‘we think of it like a camp’, says move design, ‘everyone pitches a tent around the living and dining rooms.’
marooned in the middle, the hallway protects the family’s privacy, and allows gentle harmonization between each space and its surroundings.
the façade impairs, but doesn’t eliminate communication between interior and exterior
