NORTH KOREAN LEADER KIM JONG-UN WAS PRESENT AT THE 5,000-TON WARSHIP'S LAUNCH AT CHEONGJIN SHIPYARD ON MAY 21, BUT THE CEREMONY SOON TURNED INTO A DISASTER FOR THE SUPREME LEADER 04:15,

22 May 2025 A warship launch in North Korea turned into a disaster right under the watchful eyes of Kim Jong-un. The supreme leader was present for the grand unveiling of the 5,000-ton

vessel at Cheongjin Shipyard on May 21, but the ceremony took a disastrous turn when a severe mishap occurred during the launch. The event, intended to showcase the regime's prowess,

descended into chaos when the launch sequence was mismanaged. Due to an error, the stern sled was released too soon, causing it to become stuck and leaving the front of the ship wedged in

place. The imbalance resulted in damage to the hull and brought the entire operation to an embarrassing halt. Kim Jong-un witnessed the debacle firsthand and did not hold back in his

response. He condemned the incident as a "serious accident that could not have happened, could not be tolerated," and slammed it as a "criminal act caused by pure

carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism," reports the Express. He made it clear that those at fault – including senior figures from the Department of Munitions

Industry of the Party Central Committee, the Institute of Dynamics of the State Academy of Sciences, Kim Chaek University of Technology, the Central Ship Design Institute, and Cheongjin

Shipyard – would face severe consequences. Article continues below Kim Jong-un has issued a stern warning that those found accountable will face repercussions when the ruling party's

Central Committee convenes next month, stating they will "not avoid being dealt with", reports the Mirror US. He stressed that restoring the destroyer goes beyond merely repairing

a vessel; it's also about reviving national pride. Kim exhorted workers at Chongjin and Rajin Shipyards to display "ardent patriotic loyalty and labor devotion" to completely

restore the ship before the June Plenary Meeting. Furthermore, he imparted "important instructions" to the accident investigation team, underscoring the gravity with which the

regime views this incident. Images picked up by Maxar Technologies suggest this could be the isolationist country’s largest and most technologically advanced warship in its fleet, raising

concern about the progression and development of North Korea’s potential offensive force. Article continues below North Korea's new weapon comes as little surprise, with 16% of national

spending going on the military last year. It is also one of nine known countries to posses nuclear weapons. North Korea has a huge fighting force eclipsed only by the world’s major powers.

Last year, Reuters published an estimate of 1.3 million active service personnel, astonishing for a country with a population of around 26 million. This was topped up by a report made by the

International Institute for Strategic Studies which estimated there was another 600,000 possible reservists. _FOR THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS AND STORIES FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE FROM THE DAILY
