Emergency services search for child reportedly missing in the thames

Emergency services have suspended their search for a missing girl after she got into difficulty in the River Thames. His Majesty's Coastguard said it received a report of two siblings

in difficulty in the water close to the Royal Terrace Pier, Gravesend, earlier today. The Coastguard, police and ambulance services were all scrambled to the incident with police boats and a

helicopter in operation. One of the children was rescued and taken to hospital. The South East Coast Ambulance Service a "male patient was assessed and treated" at the scene. The

missing girl is understood to be nine-years-old and from Romania. "The alarm was raised at about 1.35pm," the statement from the Coastguard said. "Metropolitan Police boats

are attending as well as the RNLI lifeboat from Gravesend, Kent Police, and a police helicopter. "South East Coast Ambulance Service was sent." An eyewitness told Kent Online:

“Officers are stationed along the river from Royal Terrace Pier to Town Pier and appear to be looking in the water. There are approximately four boats out at sea, including police and RNLI

vessels.” But the search was later suspended at around 6:30pm. There were warning signs saying "DANGER. Strong currents. Deep mud. WARNING KEEP OFF" along the promenade edge. A

witness told the Mail: "Apparently they were sitting on the end of the jetty with their feet in the water. Exactly what happened I don't know but the jetty is very slippery.

There’s steps off of it."
