THE 38-YEAR-OLD VANISHED ON A STAG DO IN THE ALGARVE LAST WEEK. 12:07, 04 Jun 2025Updated 14:28, 04 Jun 2025 A body has been found in the search for a Scots tourist who vanished on a stag do
in Portugal. Greg Monks, 38, vanished in the early hours of last Wednesday morning while with pals. The body find at the bottom of a ravine is reportedly “a long way from the spot where he
was last seen" in the Algarve. Portuguese newspaper daily Correio da Manha says Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria force is at the scene. It is understood fire fighters have removed the body
from the wooded area. A police source said investigators believe Greg got lost and fell to his death as he tried to get back to his hotel. Article continues below Greg, from Glasgow, had
just arrived for the five-day holiday when he became separated from his friends last week. He and his friends had checked into the Novochoro Apartments before heading out to the Albufeira
Strip. They then visited King's Cross karaoke bar before Greg separated from the group. He was last seen on CCTV in the residential area of Cerro de Aguia on Tuesday May 27, roughly
four miles away from the main club and bar strip of Albufeira. Last night Greg's sister Jillian admitted her "unimaginable" fear Greg may be "lying somewhere and we
can't find him". The family had shared a photograph of the last known picture of him, showing him in navy Nike shorts and a t-shirt of the same brand. Jillian said Greg's
friends raised the alarm on Wednesday, May 28 after he failed to appear following their first night out. Pals told his sister "he's not come home from the night before", and
asked whether they could track his phone to see his location. Jillian said when she first tried to report Greg as missing she said authorities initially did not appear to take the case
"seriously" because "it hadn't been that long". When his family arrived in Albufeira to aid search efforts, police told them there were two recorded sightings of him
on CCTV in Cerro de Aguia. This area includes "rough terrain", including jagged rocky hillsides and sharp cliffs, she said, and was over an hour's walk from the Albufeira
Strip, where his friends last saw him.The family had also set up a Facebook group to help spread the word, which now has over 10,000 members. Posters were made in English and Portuguese with
contact details and information on his last known whereabouts. A number of extensive private searches were underway, including drone searches involving volunteers. The Policia Judiciaria
police force said in a statement: “The PJ has located the body of the missing Scottish tourist in Albufeira.” It added: “PJ police, through the Southern Directorate and with the
collaboration of the Albufeira GNR police force, today located the body of a man who had been missing since May 28 in the Cerro de Aguia area of Albufeira. “The disappearance of the
38-year-old UK citizen was reported to the Albufeira GNR at 8pm on the 28th by another man who was accompanying him on holiday in the area. “After carrying out various enquiries and
establishing the presumed route taken in the early hours of that day since the last sighting, the body was located on steep wasteland. “After the appropriate judicial inspection, the body
will be removed and taken to the nearest Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.” The police force did not say in its statement whether Greg’s family had been informed but relatives
are understood to have been asked to attend an Algarve police station before the PJ went public with the discovery of Greg’s body. The force has not yet said how officers think he died. More
information is expected to be released after the autopsy takes place but privately while the hunt was still on for Greg police said there was nothing pointing to his disappearance being a
crime. A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities”. Article continues below
