A DOCTOR HAS EXPLAINED HOW THE BIOLOGICAL MAKEUP OF PROCESSED FOOD MAKES US CRAVE MORE UNHEALTHY SNACKS AND IS A BARRIER TO WEIGHT LOSS. 15:23, 20 May 2025 We all love to indulge in a sweet

treat or packet of crisps, but it's often difficult to stop munching on ultra-processed foods (UPFs) once we start. And the more unhealthy snacks we eat, the more often we crave them.

But what is it about UPFs that we find so hard to resist? And how is this negatively impacting our health and our ability to lose weight? With 56 per cent of the UK’s calorie intake coming

from ultra-processed foods, concerns are mounting about their role in rising obesity rates, metabolic disorders and poor mental health. While these products are convenient and sometimes even

marketed as healthy, they are typically low in nutritional value. As well as this, they are often packed with ingredients that can interfere with appetite regulation and promote

overconsumption. With this in mind, Dr Crystal Wyllie, a health expert at ZAVA Online Doctor is warning us of the addictive properties of UPFs and how they are deliberately designed to

trigger cravings and encourage overeating. Here's what the expert had to share about addictive ultra-processed foods and how they make it harder for us to lose weight. Article continues

below WHAT ARE ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS? According to Dr Wyllie, ultra-processed foods are manufactured products that go far beyond basic cooking or preservation. “Ultra-processed foods are

made mostly or entirely from substances not commonly found in a home kitchen, such as preservatives, emulsifiers, colourings and flavour enhancers", said the expert. "Examples

include packaged snacks, ready meals, fizzy drinks, processed meats and instant noodles. They're designed to be convenient, long-lasting and, above all, highly appealing to the senses.”

WHY ARE ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS SO ADDICTIVE? Many people struggle to understand why they crave certain foods. But when it comes to ultra-processed options, the answer often lies in how these

products are deliberately designed. The doctor continues: “If you’ve ever found yourself reaching for another handful of crisps, finishing an entire packet of biscuits or feeling

inexplicably drawn to certain foods even when you’re not hungry, you’re not alone. And it’s not just a matter of willpower. "Ultra-processed foods are specifically engineered to be

irresistible, playing on our biology and psychology to keep us coming back for more. "UPFs are deliberately engineered by manufacturers using additives, artificial flavourings,

sweeteners and texturisers, not just to extend their shelf life but to maximise their flavour, appearance and mouthfeel. This combination makes UPFs intensely rewarding to the brain, often

far more than whole foods or minimally processed foods.” THE PRICE OF POOR NUTRITION An analysis from The Food Foundation has revealed that 1,000 calories of healthy food now costs more than

double that of less healthy options, which is raising concerns that healthier diets are becoming unaffordable. New research from ZAVA Online Doctor also revealed that one in five UK adults

(21%) see the cost of healthy food or diet plans as a major barrier to losing weight. Article continues below WHAT TO DO ABOUT YOUR FOOD CRAVINGS Cravings are a natural part of life, but the

way we respond to them can make a big difference to our overall health. Dr Wyllie says: “Small changes, like satisfying a craving with a controlled portion rather than resisting it

entirely, can prevent binge eating episodes. "And instead of cutting out your favourite foods entirely, choosing smarter alternatives can help curb cravings while keeping you on track

with your health goals.” JOIN THE DAILY RECORD WHATSAPP COMMUNITY! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily
