EXPERTS BELIEVING TAKING ACTION AND FOLLOWING ADVICE WILL STOP RODENTS FROM ENTERING YOUR GARDEN THIS SUMMER. 15:06, 20 May 2025 As temperatures climb and the summer sun finally settles in,

so too does an influx of unwanted visitors in your garden. Rats, foxes, flies, squirrels and even wasps are on the lookout for food at this time of year. And one thing they are majorly

attracted to is your rubbish bins. When rats get into yourgarden, they can destroy your property and be very hard to catch. They are known for spreading nasty diseases, so it's vital to

try to prevent them from entering your home. Sightings of the rodents are reportedly up by 325% in some parts of the UK, sparking local councils and pest control experts to issue a warning

to householders. According to gardening experts poorly stored bins are a major contributor to pest problems in warmer months. Aaron Priestman from Brighton Bike Sheds, said there's a

simple and affordable way to keep these pests at bay. He added: "Poorly stored bins are like open invitations to pests. They offer a constant food source and a place to nest, especially

if your waste is left exposed or the bin is overflowing. Investing in secure, ventilated bin storage is one of the most effective ways to protect your home and garden.” Whether it’s

leftover BBQ food, kitchen scraps, or even pet waste, bins can quickly become a hotspot for animals in warmer weather. Rats are capable of squeezing through gaps as small as 15mm, while

foxes have been known to knock bins over entirely to access the contents and squirrels can actually chew through the plastic in your bins. Aaron added: "A well-designed bin store not

only keeps your outdoor space looking tidy but also acts as a physical barrier against animals. Sturdy timber storage with secure lids and proper ventilation prevents smells from escaping

and stops pests from getting in.” JOIN THE DAILY RECORD WHATSAPP COMMUNITY! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive

PESTS OUT OF YOUR BINS THIS SUMMER KEEP BIN LIDS SHUT It may sound obvious, but many people leave their bins slightly open to avoid bad smells. This just makes things worse. INVEST IN A

CLOSED BIN STORAGE UNIT Look for wooden or composite bin stores with secure front doors and lids. These not only deter pests but also protect your bins from wind and rain. CLEAN YOUR BINS

REGULARLY Residue and spills attract flies and maggots, especially in the heat. AVOID LEAVING LOOSE FOOD WASTE Always bag your food scraps securely and use compostable liners where possible.

POSITION BINS AWAY FROM DOORS AND WINDOWS This prevents smells and pests from drifting closer to your home. Article continues below With pest activity only expected to rise as we move

deeper into summer, now is the time to act. Proper bin storage is a small but powerful step in keeping your outdoor space pest-free and your home safe from unexpected visitors.
