Matty Godden can’t wait for his first return to the CBS Arena to face his former side Coventry City – a club that he believes is “building something” under new boss Frank Lampard. The former
Sky Blues striker left 12 months ago, joining Charlton Athletic in League One for an undisclosed fee. He immediately set about helping the Addicks and himself get back to playing
Championship football with an outstanding 22 goals, including 18 in the league, to help fire Charlton into the play-offs, where he was on target in the semi-final to secure a place in the
final at Wembley. And, having been part of the Athletic team that beat Leyton Orient 1-0 at the national stadium, the 33-year-old is now looking forward to returning to second tier football
and renewing old acquaintances. READ MORE: JACK RUDONI IS TALK OF THE TABLOIDS BUT WHAT NEXT FOR FRANK LAMPARD'S STAR PUPIL AT COVENTRY CITY READ MORE: COVENTRY CITY STAR LINKED AS
EVERTON BOSS DAVID MOYES TIPPED TO DIP INTO CHAMPIONSHIP MARKET “I keep in touch with the Coventry boys and they were all wishing me good luck before all our play-off games, and I was
wishing them luck too,” he said. “I had five unbelievable years there. The football club is a part of my family, and my little boy used to love watching me play for Coventry. I still get
messages from a lot of the lads and I’ve made friends for life there.” Asked what he thought of Coventry’s campaign from afar and whether he was rooting for them through their own play-off
exploits, he told Skybet.com: “It was just gutting to see the way they went out of the play-offs with that last-second goal for Sunderland.” As for the future, Godden – who scored 50 goals
in 156 appearances for the Sky Blues – is convinced it looks bright for City. “The Coventry training ground has changed now, and they are doing things with the place that set standards that
they want to be playing at the top level of English football,” he said. “They are building something – the new gaffer [Frank Lampard] has come in with different ideas to the old gaffer [Mark
Robins] - as far as I’m aware, the boys are loving life up there.” Asked how special would it will be for him to return to the CBS Arena with Charlton next season, he added: “It will be
unbelievable to return to the CBS. I’ve not had the opportunity to go back yet with playing football myself, but I look forward to going back there and catching up with a few faces.” WHAT DO
