Motorists are being reminded by the DVLA to remain vigilant about their driving licence expiry dates and opt for renewal online if necessary. The agency has relayed the message on a social
media platform X, stating: "Due to renew your driving licence? Do it online. It's easy, quick and secure to renew on gov.uk." Drivers who first got their full licence in 2015
or earlier should inspect their licences to ensure they comply with the regulation requiring a photocard driving licence update every ten years. The DVLA courteously issues a reminder letter
as the expiry date nears. To become current, individuals are advised to go to gov.uk where the renewal costs approximately £14, payable via MasterCard, Visa, Electron, or Delta cards. Those
found operating a vehicle with an expired licence could face penalties up to £1,000, accumulation of points on their driving record, or risk rendering their car insurance void. It is
crucial to note that the start date of the new licence is from the day the application is approved, rather than the expiry of the previous one. If your licence has already lapsed, it is
suggested to refrain from driving until you have been officially renewed, according to reports from Chronicle Live. In scenarios where a licence expires whilst awaiting renewal, motorists
are permitted to continue driving under certain conditions, provided they aren't disqualified from driving. Most individuals who apply online typically receive their new licences within
seven days, reports the Mirror. You'll need to return your current photocard to the DVLA, with the specific address details provided at the end of your application. Alternatively, some
might choose to renew in person at the Post Office, which will cost you £21.50. For this method, you'll need to bring along your reminder letter and current licence, or if you've
misplaced your reminder letter, just the photocard will suffice for servicing at the Post Office. You can also apply by post using a 'D1 pack' of forms available at any Post Office
that deals with DVLA photocard renewals or vehicle tax. When filling out the forms, you must include a recent printed passport-style photo, your current photocard licence if you have one,
and a cheque or postal order for £17, made payable to the DVLA. If you apply at the Post Office or by post, you should receive your driving licence within three weeks. However, this could
take longer if your medical or personal details need to be verified. You can continue driving while you wait for your new licence to arrive.
