Six cats were abandoned by a fly-tipped sofa in a lay-by near Coventry. Staff at the RSPCA were alerted to the discovery off Balsall Street in Temple Balsall on Thursday, May 8. RSPCA Animal

Rescue Officer Charlotte Holder described the dumped cats as 'very friendly' but said they were 'underweight and dehydrated.' None of them had been microchipped.

Charlotte urged anyone with information on where they came from or who abandoned them to get in touch with the RSPCA. Information can be provided by calling 0300 123 8018. READ MORE: TEEN

BAILED AFTER POPWORLD NUNEATON 'RAPE' AS THEY SAY 'UTMOST PRIORITY' Charlotte said: “All the cats were very friendly, which suggests they were pets. Sadly, they were all

underweight and dehydrated, and mum had fur loss on her back end. None had microchips.” She continued: “It is really sad to think the likelihood is that they were dumped on purpose because

they are no longer wanted by their owners, or they felt they were no longer able to care for them. It is never the right thing to do to abandon an animal like this, there is plenty of help

and advice out there for struggling pet owners, such as on the RSPCA website.” Currently, the RSPCA is braced for an influx of kittens between May and September, when breeding increases

dramatically, Charlotte said. Unexpected litters of kittens are likely to end up abandoned. Alice Potter, Cat Welfare Expert at the RSPCA, said: “Kitten season is typically the time of year

when most kittens are born, and as a charity, we see an influx of cats coming into our care as a result. With the cost of living crisis putting an extra strain on finances, we are concerned

that we may see more cats than ever in need of help at a time when our centres are already full to bursting.” SIGN UP FOR OUR FREE DAILY NEWSLETTER HERE FOR ALL THE LATEST NEWS ABOUT
