ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS IMPOSE A €450 FINE – EVEN OUTSIDE DROUGHT PERIODS Washing a car outside of designated facilities can lead to fines in France - even when drought restrictions are
not in place. The regulations against unauthorised car washing are designed to prevent pollution caused by wastewater runoff, backed by a standard fine of €450. If the activity results in
proven environmental harm - such as the release of detergents, oil, or other pollutants into the soil or water - the penalties may rise to €75,000 and up to two years in prison, as set out
in Article L216-6 of the Environmental Code. WHERE IS PROHIBITED TO WASH YOUR CAR IN FRANCE? Washing a vehicle on public roads is prohibited in France. This includes: * Public highways *
Private roads open to public traffic * Pavements and walkways * Riverbanks, harbours and quays * Public parks and gardens The ban applies regardless of drought status. On private property,
car washing is not automatically illegal. However, if wastewater reaches a public area - such as through runoff from a driveway - it can lead to a fine. WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR COLLECTING
AND USING RAINWATER IN FRANCE The reasoning behind this ban is that the water used in vehicle washing typically contains detergents, oil residues and other pollutants. When discharged into
drains or allowed to soak into the soil, this can contaminate groundwater and surface water systems. Recommended alternatives Drivers are instead advised to use certified car washes, which
are equipped with systems to treat and recycle wastewater in accordance with environmental rules. Dry-cleaning methods and eco-friendly cleaning products are also acceptable alternatives and
may reduce both water consumption and environmental risk. ADDITIONAL BANS DURING DROUGHTS Further bans on water use may be introduced by local authorities and prefectoral decrees during
periods of drought. These decrees can prohibit car washing entirely, both on private land and in car washes, depending on the severity of the drought and local water levels. Fines may be
issued for non-compliance, even if it does not cause any pollution.
