Bryan Mbeumo had just become the second Brentford player ever to score 20 Premier League goals. Yet the humble forward was not about to take all the glory. "The team have done a great
job," Mbeumo stressed at the weekend. "They helped me a lot this season to score so many goals. Without them, I don't think I could have achieved this so big praise to the
team." The attacking numbers have been well-documented - only Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak have had more goal involvements in the Premier League this season - but this is the other
selfless side to the Cameroon star, who was even 'surprised' when he was nominated for the top-flight's player of the season award. And it is not just for the cameras.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank, after all, has previously hailed Mbeumo as a player who 'drives training with his attitude, work ethic and determination to want to get better and
win'. For context, only Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes and Crystal Palace full-back Daniel Munoz have covered more ground than Mbeumo (240.9 miles) while Bournemouth star Antoine
Semenyo and Brentford team-mate Mikkel Damsgaard are the only players to have won the ball back more often in the final third (32 times). This is a player who won the most duels (12) and
made the most tackles (four) in addition to scoring two goals and setting up another in Brentford's 4-2 win against Brighton last month. Such tireless work out of possession is far from
a given with flair players. It is one of the many reasons why Mbeumo will be a man in demand this summer and why he would be a natural fit for Newcastle to help ease the burden on Jacob
Murphy, who is fresh from the best campaign of his career, at a time when the black-and-whites have no natural alternative. So much so that one Manchester United fan feared: "If we sit
back and watch him go to Newcastle, I'll be absolutely gutted. It just feels like I'm going to have to watch rivals go and sign the players I want to sign." Newcastle, unlike
Manchester United, can offer Champions League football and Brentford are open to selling the forward if the 'right bid' comes in. Although Newcastle are going to have to be smart
to be able to _strengthen _several positions this summer, the 25-year-old clearly ticks a lot of boxes for the black-and-whites. Off the field as well as on it. Signings do not necessarily
have to be squeaky clean, of course, but they need to buy into the work ethic and team-first mentality at the club because Eddie Howe is desperate not to disrupt the togetherness that has
helped get Newcastle to this point. "In all successful teams, it's there," the Magpies boss previously said. "To be successful long-term, you can't have players
thinking of themselves ahead of the team. "The team has to take priority, the club has to take priority, but I always want the individuals within the team to succeed and do well and
fulfil their dreams. At the moment, if the team does do well, a lot of players will get to that point. "When you see the other side of it and you see teams struggling in difficult
moments, usually you do have that selfish element within there so it's about trying to continue on the path that we are on, where everyone is in the same direction fighting for the same
cause."
