A COUPLE WERE LEFT BAFFLED WHILE IN NASHVILLE, US, RECENTLY AND HIRED A CAR AND PARKED IT IN A MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK. THEY WERE STUNNED BY A STRANGE RULE THEY HAD NO IDEA ABOUT LUCY MARSHALL

Lifestyle Reporter 16:58, 27 May 2025 A couple were left flabbergasted after receiving a warning for their parking technique whilst holidaying in America recently. Stef, a Northerner, and

her husband Darren were enjoying a break in Nashville, Tennessee, where they had rented a car. However, they noticed something peculiar about the local parking customs. Stef, who shares

travel advice and personal experiences with her 80,000-strong following on TikTok, recently posted a video explaining the situation. The pair had located a multi-storey car park in Franklin,

Nashville, where they intended to leave their vehicle for a day of sightseeing. Upon their return, they discovered a warning notice affixed to their windscreen. Stef, who shared the

incident via her account @stef_smith_af, stated: "Right, one thing you need to be aware of if you come to Nashville. I am not sure if it is all over Nashville or just where we are in

Franklin, but we've parked in a multi-storey car park - and I literally just said to Darren that all the cars had driven into the spaces and nobody had reversed." READ MORE: UK

tourists hit with new Spain tourist tax in popular holiday hotspot Revealing the ticket on her car, Stef added: "You're not allowed. You're not allowed to reverse into a car

park space here. Didn't get a fine, we just got a warning." If you receive a 'warning note' in Nashville, ensure its authenticity - it should state Parking Violation

Notice at the top. This follows a warning issued by Metro Police last year regarding counterfeit parking tickets, as reported by Nashville television station, WSMV. Article continues below

IS REVERSING INTO A SPACE ILLEGAL IN NASHVILLE? Backing into a parking space, or reverse parking is generally not illegal in Nashville - and Tennessee law does not explicitly ban it - but

often there may be local regulations or signs in specific locations that prohibit it. These rules are typically sign posted. NUMBER PLATES In the comments of Stef's video, some

suggested it may be because in some American states, drivers only require one number plate - on the back. Tennessee law mandates that only one license plate, a rear plate, be displayed for

most passenger vehicles. One commenter suggested: "It's so the number plates can be checked by patrol without anyone having to get out their vehicle because so many US cars only

have a plate on the rear of the car." "I would think it's because of the number plate," added another. One other said: "It's probably because 99% of American

cars don't have a front licence plate - but that in itself drives me mad, like why remove front licence plates? It's so weird!" FACING THE WRONG WAY Sharing another insight, a

commenter recounted: "When I was in San Francisco I saw a space on the other side of the road. I parked in it and my friend told me you aren't allowed to park facing against the

flow of traffic." On the streets of most US states, parking in opposition to the traffic's direction is not permitted due to the potential danger and interference it could pose.

The regulations require all vehicles parked parallel to the street kerb to face the same direction as the moving traffic. Article continues below In Nashville, the rule of thumb for parallel

parking dictates keeping the vehicle's right-hand wheels aligned with and no further than 18 inches from the right-hand kerb. Local authorities, such as those governing Nashville, are

at liberty to introduce exemptions, allowing left-side parking on one-way thoroughfares and angled parking on any street. For angle parking to occur on state and federal highways, an

explicit go-ahead from the Tennessee Department of Transportation is requisite.
