A HORSE IS UNDERSTOOD TO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A ROAD TRAFFIC COLLISION AT MORPETH 08:22, 02 Jun 2025Updated 08:44, 02 Jun 2025 A horse has been killed in a collision on the A1 at Morpeth.
The incident was first flagged by highways bosses shortly after 4am. One person has also been taken to hospital with minor injuries. Both carriageways were shut for some time - but then the
northbound road re-opened around 6.30am. The southbound carriageway remained closed at 8am. This is what we know so far: WHAT HAPPENED? At around 4am National Highways North East reported
that the A1 was blocked at Morpeth- between the town itself and Stannington. At this stage, the agency reported that this was due to reports of "horses in the road". It is
understood around six horses were in the road. One has been hit by a vehicle and died at the scene of its injuries. The other horses have been secured. The road remained fully closed for
several hours, but at around 5.45am it was confirmed that the northbound carriageway had been re-opened. A diversion remained in place southbound. National Highways reported that the
incident had involved a collision between a horse and a vehicle. The highways agency confirmed Northumbria Police were on the scene. One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

itself and the exit for the B1337 at Stannington. WHAT HAS THE POLICE SAID? A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just before 3am this morning (Monday), we received a report of a
collision on the A1 southbound carriageway at Morpeth. It was reported a vehicle has collided with a horse – which was on the carriageway. "Emergency services attended, and one person
was taken to hospital with injuries described as minor. Sadly, the animal died of its injuries at the scene." The police continued: "Officers worked to ensure another four horses
which were near the road were secured. The road was closed for a short time to allow the vehicle and animal to be recovered but has since re-opened to traffic.” WHAT HAVE TRAFFIC BOSSES
SAID? In a statement online, National Highways said: "The A1 in Northumberland is closed southbound between the A197 (Morpeth) and the B1337 (Stannington) due to a collision involving a
vehicle and a horse. Emergency services including Northumberland Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic
