CITY COUNCIL LEADER KAREN KILGOUR WILL PRAISE EDDIE HOWE'S ACHIEVEMENTS SINCE TAKING CHARGE AS NEWCASTLE UNITED MANAGER AS "NOTHING SHORT OF EXTRAORDINARY” 13:01, 20 May 2025 Eddie

Howe is set to be officially granted the Freedom of Newcastle next week. It was announced in March that the Newcastle United manager was in line for the city’s highest civic honour after

leading the Magpies to their first domestic trophy in 70 years, with the historic Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool. A vote has now been scheduled for next Wednesday, May 28, for city

councillors to officially confirm the award. The NUFC boss is not expected to be in attendance at the Civic Centre for the meeting, with the local authority saying it hopes to organise a

separate event to present him with the honour. The 47-year-old is set to join such legendary Newcastle footballing figures as Sir Bobby Robson, Jackie Milburn, and Alan Shearer in being

granted the freedom of the city. A motion recommending him for the honorary status describes his achievements since arriving at St James’ Park as "nothing short of extraordinary”. The

citation, which will be presented by council leader Karen Kilgour, adds: “Newcastle United is part of the fabric of our city with the fortunes of the club playing a huge part in the lives of

supporters in Newcastle and across the world. Generations of supporters have never seen their beloved club lift a domestic trophy, and under his leadership we all now have treasured

memories of a truly unforgettable day. “The bus parade and celebratory event on the Town Moor on March 29, 2025 gave Geordies an amazing opportunity to show their love for their club and

respect for Eddie Howe. The events had a significant economic impact on the city, as well as on the spirits and wellbeing of the people of the city, and surrounding areas, and cannot be

underestimated, nor will they ever be forgotten.” KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST LOCAL NEWS FROM NEWCASTLE WITH OUR FREE NEWSLETTER The Freedom of Newcastle is a ceremonial honour

bestowed on eminent individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the city. Other recipients include former NUFC goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, ex-chairman Freddy Shepherd,

Great North Run founder Sir Brendan Foster, England rugby legend Jonny Wilkinson, and the football club itself. It is not the same as being a hereditary freeman of Newcastle. The hereditary

freemen are a centuries-old group who have traditionally had special rights and duties, including the right to graze cattle on the Town Moor, and who must swear an oath to defend the city.

Freedom of the City, the highest honour the city can bestow on an individual or group. On Wednesday May 28, members will vote on the motion put forward by Coun Karen Kilgour, leader of the

council, in the immediate aftermath of Newcastle United’s historic victory in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley. “Should the motion be approved, we will work with the club

to present Eddie Howe with the award at a future date. Eddie Howe will not be at the meeting on May 28.” JOIN OUR BREAKING NEWS AND TOP STORIES WHATSAPP COMMUNITY Join our Breaking News and
