Askew road west closure ends as demolition starts on compromised wall

steps” around a compromised wall now being considered. On May 23, Gateshead Council announced a road closure on Askew Road, between Cuthbert Street and the Redheugh Bridge roundabout on the

A189. The closure was sparked by concerns from Network Rail around the lines running beneath the bridge due to problems on a retaining wall on the north side of the road. On its Facebook

page, the local authority stated: “Network Rail requested the road closure. Gateshead Council is the highway authority, but this is a safety issue led by Network Rail for their

infrastructure.” As a result, motorists were advised to use Cuthbert Street, Tyne Road, and the western section of Askew Road West to get in and out of the Teams area. Now, Network Rail has

now confirmed that traffic has been restored and demolition work on the troubled wall is ongoing. A Network Rail spokesperson said: "Engineers have been addressing concerns with a

retaining wall near the railway lines beneath Askew Road in Gateshead. Traffic management measures have now been removed, restoring normal road access. "Contractors are safely

demolishing the compromised wall without disrupting traffic, while examination teams assess the situation this week to determine next steps. We're working closely with local authorities
