THE RVI'S BRAIN TUMOUR TEAM IS CELEBRATING AFTER BEING RE-ACCREDITED AS A TESSA JOWELL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE. 10:00, 16 May 2025 Brain tumour medics at Newcastle's RVI are
celebrating after again being awarded as a "centre of excellence". The neuro-oncology department at the RVI has retained its status as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence - which
is a prestigious honour highlighting the level of care patients receive. It reflects the "quality and range of treatment and care". The centre of excellence programme is named for
the late Labour politician Dame Tessa Jowell - who died in 2018 after being diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumour. The Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the RVI,
first received the accreditation in March 2021. Akbar Hussain, neuro-oncology surgeon, said the team, which operates on 30 new brain tumour patients a month, was delighted. He said: "We
are delighted to be among a small number of centres across the country awarded this reaccreditation, in recognition of our holistic brain tumour treatment and care. "This is a really
special achievement and a testament to the outstanding commitment of our staff, working in varied roles from the first assessment, through the whole treatment journey, care, recovery and
rehabilitation of patients." Article continues below KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS AND TOP STORIES FROM THE NORTH EAST WITH OUR FREE NEWSLETTER The team includes
