EXPERTS SAY MANY HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING PENSIONERS, ARE STILL UNAWARE OF THE HELP THEY COULD BE RECEIVING FROM THE GOVERNMENT 11:28, 29 May 2025 People on low income are being urged to
check if they qualify for three DWP benefits that could provide a boost of up to £1,708 a month. Many householders are unaware they could claim these benefits and are therefore being
encouraged to check if they are eligible. People may not be claiming the financial support because of a lack of awareness or an assumption they cannot get help. According to gas company
Cadent, people attending its support programmes said there was widespread confusion about whether they may qualify for Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Attendance Allowance. Universal
Credit and Attendance Allowance are each worth up to £400 a month and Pension Credit £908 a month. Winter Fuel Payments and the Warm Home Discount are also both being extended to reach more
people, reports BirminghamLive. But experts also want pensioners worried about their finances, and their loved ones, to check if they can get other benefits. Phil Burrows, head of customer
vulnerability and social purpose at Cadent, said: "News this week of a reduction in the Energy Price Cap and the Government's desire to make more pensioners eligible for Winter
Fuel Payments, will be welcome for households across the UK. "But, as an industry, we cannot afford to become complacent. Despite the seasonal shift, we’re still seeing sustained – and
in many cases, increasing – footfall at our Centres for Warmth across the country, with people continuing to seek refuge and support, particularly around debt. “We saw demand for financial
support surge by 118% last winter, with over 20,000 individuals accessing these vital services through Cadent’s national Centre for Warmth programme. Almost three-quarters of centres
offering financial support have seen an average increase of 225% in usage, compared to 2023. Article continues below “The support most utilised at our centres includes guidance on accessing
Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit, and Universal Credit, a clear sign that many are still unaware of the help they could be receiving. These findings highlight the growing financial
pressure on vulnerable households, and while these measures are supportive, the scale of rising need remains deeply concerning." UNIVERSAL CREDIT Universal Credit is a payment delivered
by the Department for Work and Pensions to help with your living costs. It’s paid monthly - or twice a month for some people in Scotland. You may be able to get it if you’re on a low
income, out of work or you cannot work. Here are more details about how much money you could get and the full eligibility rules. There is also information on the Government website about
making a claim. PENSION CREDIT Pension Credit gives you extra money to help with your living costs if you’re over State Pension age and on a low income. Pension Credit can also help with
housing costs such as ground rent or service charges. You might get extra help if you’re a carer, severely disabled, or responsible for a child or young person. Pension Credit is separate
from your State Pension. You can get Pension Credit even if you have other income, savings or own your own home. When you apply for Pension Credit your income is calculated. If you have a
partner, your income is calculated together. Pension Credit tops up your weekly income to £227.10 if you’re single, or your joint weekly income to £346.60 if you have a partner. Here are
more details. Article continues below ATTENDANCE ALLOWANCE Attendance Allowance helps with extra costs if you have a disability or health condition severe enough that you need someone to
help look after you. It’s paid at two different rates and how much you get depends on the level of care that you need because of your disability or health condition. You could get £73.90 or
£110.40 a week to help with personal support if both of the following apply - you have a physical disability, a mental disability, or a health condition, and you’re State Pension age or
older. Attendance Allowance does not cover mobility needs. More information can be found here.
