UK TOURISTS ARE BEING WARNED NOT TO PACK ONE POPULAR ITEM IN THEIR HOLD LUGGAGE OVER SAFETY FEARS 08:47, 02 Jun 2025 UK tourists have been warned against packing a popular holiday item in
your hold luggage over safety fears. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), who are in charge of the safety and security of aviation, as well as overseeing consumer protection, has flagged
portable chargers as a risk. Portable chargers are handy if your phone is running out of juice, but make sure you pack these in your hand luggage and not your checked baggage, as it could be
a potential fire hazard. If the item was to ignite when in the hold, it could have a catastrophic impact for those onboard. READ MORE: EASYJET FLIGHT FROM ALICANTE TO MANCHESTER DECLARES
EMERGENCY AND DIVERTS TO GATWICK The CAA advises instead switching off the device completely, not just left in standby mode, and kept with you in your hand luggage for maximum safety.
Article continues below Regulations concerning the transportation of portable chargers stems from a rule which was enforced in 2016, which explains if one was to be damaged mid-flight, the
fire which may occur could not be handled in the hold, according to the Express. The public body states: "Poorly manufactured, faulty and misused lithium batteries and those which have
not been protected against short circuit can experience something called ‘thermal runaway’. "This results in them getting so hot that they can catch fire, explode and ignite other
nearby batteries." To ensure you are compliant with the regulations, it is important to take note of the capacity of the power bank, in addition to protecting each device individually.

checked in to the hold. * Generally, they cannot exceed 100 watt-hours, however some airlines may allow 160 watt-hours, but it is recommended to check with your airline before flying. * Each
device must be protected individually. You can do this by taping the terminals or placing each power bank in a separate plastic bag. Some airlines have banned passengers power banks from
even being placed in the overhead locker, with Air Busan stating you must have the charging product on your person at all times. Easyjet allows flyers to take power banks onboard as
hand-luggage, but is firm that each one must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. Article continues below The airline also has rules regarding how many power banks you can
take with you, which currently stands at two per person, which have a capacity of 100 Wh or less.
