housing.TravelJames Rodger Content Editor10:43, 04 Jun 2025UK tourists flying with TUI, Jet2, Easyjet to Spain face being 'targeted' UK tourists in Tenerife face a MASSIVE protest from

locals next week as the battle against overtourism continues. European Union locals are set to protest in a major demonstration against UK holidaymakers and a lack of affordable housing.

A protest has been planned outside a hotel in the south of Tenerife against a new luxury villa complex. Environmental campaigners in Tenerife are set to protest against the construction of

420 luxury villas at El Puertito de Adeje.

‌ The demonstration, organised by the platform Salvar el Puertito, will take place at 12pm on 14 June, outside the Hotel Baobab Suites in Costa Adeje, owned by Belgian businessman Filip

Hoste, the promoter behind the contentious “Cuna del Alma” tourism development.

Organisers say they will use the protest to inform hotel guests “about the sale of luxury properties in an illegal project” and to raise awareness of “how El Puertito is being destroyed” and

why “we must not support businesses that harm the environment.”

Article continues below The upcoming protest is expected to reignite debate over the future of El Puertito and the balance between tourism development and environmental conservation in the

Canary Islands.

The tourism project has come under fire for alleged environmental damage, illegal works, and violations of archaeological protections, the Canarian Weekly reports.

Three sanction proceedings have been opened against the developer for destroying heritage sites, threatening protected flora, and commencing construction without an environmental impact

assessment. However, all three cases have been allowed to expire under the current Canary Islands Government.

Article continues below The protest will reportedly target Jet2, Tui and Easyjet passengers, with the hotel complex housing and serving all three airlines. It comes after tens of thousands

of people have taken to the streets of Spain in the latest protest against housing speculation and to demand access to affordable homes.

Organisers claim that up to 150,000 joined the protest in Madrid while smaller demonstrations were held in about 40 cities across the country. Protesters from Málaga on the Costa del Sol to

Vigo in the Atlantic northwest chanted “end the housing racket” and “landlords are guilty, the government is responsible”.
