Tesco shoppers warned over major change to opening hours

SOME STORES WILL SEE THE CHANGES 16:44, 01 Jun 2025 Tesco shoppers are being warned of changes to store opening times due to a new trial. The supermarket is looking at adjusting its hours in

a bid to slash staffing costs. Employees at some Tesco Express stores which do not bring in as much money will be the base for the test. It is understood that these stores will close an

hour earlier at 10pm instead of 11pm. There is also expected to be fewer staff working during these hours. Tesco's trial is thought to be just taking place in a 'small number'

of stores - but the exact number is unclear. Article continues below A spokesperson said the shake-up is to 'make things simpler for our colleagues and to ensure that we are running

supermarket is facing soaring costs following Chancellor Rachel Reeves' tax raid in April, The Telegraph reports. Tesco previously said it was facing a rise in staffing costs, in part

due to a £235m increase in National Insurance contributions and the rise in minimum wage. It warned it would be axing £500million of costs to tackle this. Under the changes, employers pay a

tax equivalent to 15 per cent of their workers’ pay packets, up from 13.8 per cent previously. The threshold at which the tax kicks in has also fallen from earnings of £9,100 a year to

£5,000. The minimum wage also increased by 6.7 per cent in April. Retailers are thought to be facing about £7 billion in extra costs following the Budget. Article continues below A Tesco
