is urging households to act now to make savings on their energy bills.

He is encouraging energy customers to take advantage of fixed tariff deals currently on offer from a number of suppliers.

It comes ahead of the new Energy Price Cap from July 1, when average bills will come down by £126 a year.

But Martin has pointed out the fact there are fixed deals on the market currently cheaper than prices from July, so by acting now households could slash their payments even further.

The money expert also reminded customers that while bills are falling from July, rates will only go roughly back to where they were before April.

He said the standard variable accounts from the likes of British Gas, Octopus and Eon were worth ditching in favour of fixed tariffs.

Martin said: "The announcement that the price cap is to fall by 7%, is welcome, but nothing to shout home about.

"All this really does is reverse April's rise so it's back to roughly the cost at the start of the year.

"Crucially energy bills this July will still be 10% higher than at the same time last year."

He added: "Compare these falls to the cheapest fixes on the market today, which are 18% below the current cap, showing the price cap is a pants cap."

Money Saving Expert said: "Lock in at up to 18% less than today's price cap, saving immediately (it's 12% less than July's).

"A fixed tariff is where you lock in a rate for a set time, giving you the boon of certainty, but at the moment the best give direct savings too.

Article continues below "As the cheapest fixes are lower than the current cap, those on capped tariffs can instantly reduce costs, and you'll still save against July's even after the drop

(beyond that no one knows for certain)."
