SCORES OF BRITISH FAMILIES ARE STRANDED IN MAJORCA PALMA AIRPORT AFTER A STRING OF FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS WERE CAUSED BY 'AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL RESTRICTIONS' 08:45, 03 Jun 2025
"Scores upon scores" of Brits are stranded at Majorca Palma airport after multiple flight cancellations, the chaos attributed to 'air traffic control restrictions'. Many
British families have been left unable to return from their half-term breaks in Majorca with airlines such as easyJet due to conditions imposed following adverse weather across Europe, which
were "outside [of the airline's] control". These events unfold shortly after Ryanair's top boss, Michael O'Leary, aired grievances about "shoddy ATC
services", cautioning that they could lead to unprecedented flight delays come summer 2025. READ MORE: DEAL RAISES HOPES OF BIRMINGHAM BIN STRIKE END Beth Rafferty, a 31 year old and
her loved ones, makeup just four of the multitudes of Britons caught up in the disruption, unable to board a flight back to Gatwick on Sunday (1). Hailing from Hastings, East Sussex, Beth,
alongside her partner Lewis Chapman, 26, and their two kids aged eight and ten, found their journey home thwarted. Article continues below It has been reported that over 120 flights faced
delays, whilst fewer than 10 were outright cancelled. The family was set to board their 7pm easyJet service when an email notified them of the cancellation due to 'air traffic control
(ATC) restrictions'. Subsequently, it was clarified that these 'restrictions' stemmed from foul weather plaguing Northern Europe. The notification Beth and her brood received
stated: "We're sorry that your flight has been cancelled. "This is due to air traffic control restrictions (...). "The disruption to your flight is outside of our control
and is considered to be an extraordinary circumstance." Beth has recounted how their family, alongside hundreds of others, found themselves stranded at the airport, necessitating an
unplanned hotel stay last night. Unable to secure a prompt alternative flight on easyJet, they've had to fork out £1,500 for Jet2 tickets to ensure their kids don't skip any more
schooling. The insurance system administrator shared their plight: "We have managed to get a flight to Bournemouth - but not to our original destination." She noted how some
travellers had been rerouted to unexpected cities saying, "Lots of people have ended up flying to Belfast or Liverpool instead of London, we've been fortunate." Beth then
mentioned, "Apparently there was an air traffic control issue. "To my knowledge, all the flights cancelled have been easyJet," she added. "The only explanation given is
the air traffic control issue," she explained. Observing operations at the airport, Beth said, "We've been sat watching loads of other flights from other airlines land and
take off, so we're not sure why." The mother observed that the airport was crowded with people in limbo, many being families like hers. She also found out that about six other
easyJet flights destined for the UK in the same 7pm window were all axed. The unexpected travel changes led them to shell out £1,500 for replacement flights, plus an extra £300 for urgent
accommodation, driven by a desire to minimise school absence for their children. Expressing her frustration, Beth stated: "We've been told by someone at the airport front desk we
won't be compensated for the new flights." However, she did receive some hope as she relayed: "But we might get the money back for the accommodation. "I rang the
childrens' school to explain it and it doesn't look like we'll get a fine." The family have jetted back home this lunchtime (2) so their youngsters can return to class
tomorrow. An easyJet spokesperson commented: "Unfortunately, due to the impact of widespread thunderstorms across Northern Europe yesterday, some flights were unable to operate as
planned. Article continues below "We did all we could to minimise the impact of the weather disruption on our customers, providing options to rebook or a refund their flights as well as
providing hotel accommodation and meals for these who required them. "The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and while this was outside
of our control, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused."
