MAHIR ABDULRAHMAN WAS FOUND UNRESPONSIVE IN HIS CELL AT HMP FOSSE WAY AROUND HALF AN HOUR AFTER TWO DEFENDANTS ENTERED HIS ROOM 05:31, 31 May 2025 A convict who brutally murdered a fellow
prisoner for wanting to move cells 'relished' the crime lifestyle and posed with guns, it can be revealed. Ashirie Smith, 19, is now serving life behind bars after launching the
brutal assault on Mahir Abdulrahman at HMP Fosse Way in Leicestershire last year, with the help of fellow convict Thierry Robinson, 21. The 31-year-old Sudanese national sustained numerous
abrasions and bruises to his head and neck, indicative of a prolonged assault, along with rib fractures, and was declared dead at 8.44am despite efforts by prison officers and paramedics to
revive him. On Wednesday, May 28, a jury at Leicester Crown Court convicted Smith of murder and acquitted Robinson of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter. Article continues below On
Thursday, May 29, Smith received a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 and a half years, while Robinson was handed an 11-year sentence. Shaan Karim, 38, a third defendant, was acquitted
of both murder and manslaughter, according to Leicestershire Police. Michael Burrows KC, representing the prosecution, related to the court how Mr Abdulrahman, who was serving a 35-week
sentence for a sexual offence, had expressed a desire to be rehoused from his cell the day before his demise due to fears for his personal safety. Jurors heard that Karim had made a phone
call to his mother from jail, claiming he had been subjected to "terrorising for days" and labelled it as "bullying" by fellow inmates. Allegations surfaced about a
purported confrontation involving Smith and Robinson the day prior to Mr Abdulrahman's death, where he reportedly splashed them with water from a kettle. It can be exclusively revealed
that Smith, formerly of Brays Road in Handsworth, was serving time after police officers discovered shocking videos of him dancing around his house and posing with a gun. Boastful Smith,
then aged 17, was rumbled by the damning clips on his mobile phone after officers raided his house in Handsworth. In scenes that resemble a movie, the footage shows the balaclava-clad gunman
skipping and dancing around while waving the firearm around. He was also seen posing for the camera in a grey tracksuit while moving side to side with the pistol, with a bag for life and
exercise equipment in the background. West Midlands Police said the force received intelligence that Smith may have been keeping a firearm at his house in November 2023. Dramatic body-cam
footage shows armed cops swooping at the address where they found the weapon, a Walther pistol loaded with five 9mm bullets. The now-killer went on to admit possession of a firearm and
ammunition and was jailed for three years at Birmingham Crown Court. Speaking after the case, Detective Inspector Mark Parish from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit conveyed:
"The injuries suffered by Mahir Abdulrahman showed a serious, sustained attack had taken place which ultimately led to his death." Article continues below He also commended the
investigative team: "Thanks to the hard work of the investigation team, Smith and Robinson have been convicted in court and will now have to face responsibility for their actions."
Wyn Jones, Serco prison director, stated: "Any death in prison is a tragedy but the murder of Mr Abdulrahman was a heinous act. My thoughts remain with his family and those affected by
his untimely death. "Since the tragedy, our focus has been to bring those responsible to justice by working with the police to secure a conviction. I hope the verdicts will bring
closure for his family."
