2025Updated 11:35, 30 May 2025 Chilling CCTV footage reveals two grinning prisoners exiting a cell after savagely beating a fellow inmate to death at a prison. Ashirie Smith, 19, and Thierry

Robinson, 21, launched a brutal assault on Mahir Abdulrahman, 31, at HMP Fosse Way in Leicestershire on 20 August last year. The victim was discovered unresponsive by a female prison

BLOCKING LORRIES Abdulrahman later died from his injuries at the scene due to a bleed on the brain. The court heard that Abdulrahman had been subjected to mockery by Smith and Robinson,

which culminated in him hurling a hot kettle at them. Article continues below The following day, Smith initiated the deadly attack after a prison officer unlocked his cell door and then

continued their rounds. CCTV captured how Robinson and a shirtless Smith entered the cell before leaving it approximately 37 seconds later. Smith, formerly of Brays Road in Handsworth, was

then observed re-entering the cell and exiting again shortly after, having executed the brutal attack. Emergency services were summoned and found Abdulrahman in cardiac arrest at 7.45am, but

despite their efforts, he could not be saved and passed away an hour later. Smith was convicted of murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17-and-a-half years

at Leicester Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, May 29). Robinson was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter and was handed an 11-year prison sentence. A third defendant, Shaan

Karim, 38, was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter charges. Detective Inspector Mark Parish, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, commented: "The injuries suffered by

Mahir Abdulrahman showed a serious, sustained attack had taken place which ultimately led to his death. "Thanks to the hard work of the investigation team, Smith and Robinson have been

convicted in court and will now have to face responsibility for their actions." Serco Prison Director Wyn Jones expressed: "Any death in prison is a tragedy but the murder of Mr

Abdulrahman was a heinous act. "My thoughts remain with his family and those affected by his untimely death. "Since the tragedy, our focus has been to bring those responsible to

justice by working with the police to secure a conviction. Article continues below "I hope the verdicts will bring closure for his family."
