IT ALSO HAS ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS 02:58, 02 Feb 2025 As energy prices remain a challenge for many households, experts are urging people to consider an investment that could slash bills and

even eventually make them money. Solar panel experts from Grant Store are urging homeowners to consider investing in the latest energy-efficient technologies. While these upgrades come with

significant upfront costs, they promise major savings and environmental benefits over time, the experts said. A Grant Store spokesperson said: "Upgrading to heat pumps or solar panels

might feel like a big spend upfront, but when you think about the long-term savings and how much greener it makes your home, it’s a smart move." Air source heat pumps, for example, use

energy from the air to heat your home. They’re designed to replace gas boilers, cutting energy use by up to 75% and lasting twice as long. “Pairing heat pumps with solar panels is a

game-changer,” the expert continued. “Solar panels can help power your heat pump, so you’re saving even more on energy bills while reducing your carbon footprint.” The costs of heat pumps

vary, with installations ranging from £9,000 to £19,000 for air source systems and up to £34,000 for ground source models. Solar panel installation can typically cost between £5,000 and

£8,000, but the long-term benefits make these investments worthwhile, the experts claimed. Article continues below Government schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers up to

£7,500 towards the cost of heat pumps, and subsidies for solar panel installations, also help to make this technology more accessible. “Heat pumps and solar panels aren’t just good for the

environment – they’re great for your wallet,” said the Grant Store expert. “With the energy price cap currently at £1,738 a year for a typical household, finding ways to cut those costs is

more important than ever.” Solar panels can generate up to 4,000 kWh of electricity annually for a typical home, offsetting a large portion of your electricity usage. When combined with heat

pumps, the potential savings climb to £300 or more annually. What's more, any excess power generated can be sold back to the grid, meaning money can be made. “And it’s not just about

big upgrades,” the expert added. “Simple steps like draught-proofing windows and doors can save £80 a year, turning off appliances instead of leaving them on standby adds another £45, and

switching to a cheaper fixed-rate energy deal could save £140 annually. Every little bit helps.” Beyond investing in energy-efficient technology, homeowners can benefit from supplier

support. Trade body Energy UK reports that energy providers have pledged more than £500 million this winter to help households struggling with their bills. Support includes: * Credit for

bills or prepayment meters * Hardship funds and debt write-offs * Reducing or waiving standing charges * Providing energy-saving devices and technology Additionally, the Warm Home Discount

Scheme offers £150 off electricity bills for eligible households, providing much-needed help during the colder months. “With energy prices staying high, switching to energy-efficient

solutions just makes sense for homeowners,” says the expert. “By combining heat pumps, solar panels, and a few small changes around the house, you could save hundreds of pounds every year

while making your home more sustainable. Article continues below “Now’s the time to take control of your home’s energy future. Government incentives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which

offers up to £7,500 towards heat pumps, and supplier schemes are making these upgrades more affordable. You’ll save money, live more comfortably, and help the environment – it’s a win-win.”
