DRIVERS COULD FIND THEMSELVES IN TROUBLE FOR WEARING THE WRONG PAIR OF SHADES 10:02, 03 Jun 2025 It's always a good idea to keep a pair of sunglasses in the car during bright and sunny
conditions to avoid being dazzled by the light - but drivers must make sure they are the right pair. Many people may not know that some shades are unsuitable for driving, and motorists could
be pulled over and fined if caught. Drivers may assume any sunglasses can be used when behind the wheel, but this is not the case. READ MORE: MIDLANDS TOWN NAMED SECOND 'MOST

standards and are given a rating between zero and four. Article continues below Category four sunglasses are deemed unsuitable for driving as they block out too much light and could be
dangerous. Most standard pairs on sale in shops tend to be category two but it's always worth checking to avoid falling foul of the rules. A motoring spokesperson at Bumper explained:
"Not all sunglasses are safe for driving, and wearing the wrong kind could land you in legal trouble. "Sunglasses with overly dark tints can dramatically reduce visibility,
especially in shaded areas, tunnels or when moving between light conditions - putting you and other road users at risk.” “Wearing category four sunglasses behind the wheel is dangerous
because they transmit very little light. "Drivers need to be able to clearly see road signs, pedestrians, and changes in road surface. Anything that compromises that is a risk.” Article
continues below They added: “The Highway Code makes it clear: if you are dazzled by sunlight, you must slow down or stop. "Failing to do so because of inappropriate eyewear puts the
responsibility squarely on the driver. “If your vision is compromised and that leads to an accident, your insurer may argue you were at fault — and that could invalidate your cover."
