This AARP survey of 2,480 adults ages 50-65 examines attitudes toward retirement as well as recent actions taken to prepare for the future and identifies opportunities for assisting
pre-retirees as they approach the next step in their lives. Because attitudes toward retirement and preparations for the future vary considerably across the population, the report compares
and contrasts views of four different “segments” of respondents. The four segments include Pro-Active Self-Actualizers, Day-to-Day Life Embracers, Cautious Clockwatchers, and Doubters. The
survey was administered online from November 21 to December 20, 2012 by GfK Custom Research to its national KnowledgePanel, a probability-based web panel designed to be representative of the
U.S. population. The findings are based on 2,480 adults ages 50-65 who were not yet fully retired and who met the other eligibility criteria detailed in the report. For more information,
please contact S. Kathi Brown at [email protected]. Members of the media should contact AARP’s Media Relations Department at (202) 434-2560.
